SENATOR ROSE OKOJI OKO:
A Jewel Undiminished by Death

The Female Parliamentary Caucus received with shock the news of the passing on of our jewel, colleague, friend, and sister, the Late Distinguished Senator Rose Okoji Oko.

How sad it is to speak of our rare gem in the past tense, for were the Grim Reaper a respecter of beauty, brain, sophistication, grandeur, social grace, philanthropy, and political prowess, she would still have been here with us.

Senator Rose Oko was excellence personified, growing from the ranks as a college teacher, university lecturer, Commissioner for Education, National Commissioner of the defunct National Electoral Commission (NEC), Federal Commissioner of the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Person (NCFRMI), and Member of the House of Representatives, to become a ranking Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Therefore, although her death is a heavy blow to the crusade for gender mainstreaming in political leadership, it is consoling that she stood out in her generation in selfless service to God and humanity as a cerebral scholar, teacher, public administrator, philanthropist, and political mobiliser and mover. Our jewel is undiminished by death, for those who made their marks in the sands of time never die.

Dear sister, you will be greatly missed, not only by your family and the Female Parliamentary Caucus, but also by the nation as a whole. Yet our tears pale into hope, knowing that you are returning to your Maker for a deserved rest after an accomplished life.

Goodnight, dear friend and may Heavens grant your kind soul a peaceful repose.
By Sen Joy Emodi on behalf of Female Legislators
